Elective Area

The module Elective Area continues to aquaint students with another (non)physical field of research and to strengthen interdisciplinary knowledge. It covers advanced courses with 12 credit points (CP) in total. In principle, students can take all courses offered by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences that have an appropriate level.

Important Notes:

  • First and foremost - courses chosen in the Elective Area must not belong to one of the areas already chosen as Primary or Secondary Area of Specialization.
  • The courses must not agree with the content of a course which has been accredited for your bachelor or another part of the master program.
  • There is a list of typical and recommended combinations of courses below.
  • The number of participants might be limited in specific courses offered by other departments. Thus, you will not be able to register directly through KLIPS for some of the options listed below. In such cases, please contact the program coordinator.
  • Unless otherwise regulated, the rules of the organizing department or faculty apply to imported modules.
  • The module examination can consist of a maximum of three examination elements.

Recommended Courses

Courses Offered by the Physics Institutes
  • Advanced Statistical Physics or Advanced Quantum Mechanics if not credited elsewhere - a third lab course would also be acceptable.
  • Core or Specialized Courses if they are assigned to areas of specialization not already chosen as Primary or Secondary Area. This includes courses offered at the University of Bonn.
  • Scientific Programming in Python (U Bonn)
  • By decision of the examination board, students may choose the courses Geometry in Physics, Introduction to Network Science, and Probability Theory regardless of their individual choice of Primary and Secondary Area.
