Mandatory Part

Mandatory Part

The Mandatory Part aims at gaining advanced knowledge in theoretical physics and profound skills in current experimental techniques. The offered topics in the Mandatory Part are chosen to give preferably good conditions for the areas you can choose in the Specialization Part.

The Mandatory Part consists of one advanced lecture in theoretical physics and two advanced practical lab courses.

Advanced Theoretical Physics

For Advanced Theoretical Physics you have to attend (at least) one out of the lectures Advanced Quantum Mechanics (summer term) and Advanced Statistical Physics (winter term).

If you are not sure which one to take refer to the respective module coordinators or the course guidance.

Please note that you may also attend both lectures and use the spare one in the Elective Part.

Practical Course M

For the Pracitical Courses M you have to choose 2 topics out of the following 6:

In Cologne you have to do 4 experiments per topic, in Bonn students have to perform 2 experiments covering 5 so-called "labunits" (LU).

Please note the following:

  • Every student has to register separately for each of the two Practical Courses M topics
  • In order to ensure a smooth and efficient run of the Practical Courses M organized by the various Insitutes of Experimental Physics, we ask you read this bulletin carefully and to follow the instructions stated therein throughout the course
  • The Practical Course M Computional Physics is organized department-wide and has been offered for the first time in winter term 2022/23. Concerning the organisational details, this ourse differs to some extent from the experimental Practical Courses M. In particular, the number of students for this new course is limited.
