Physics is one of the most fascinating subjects of science.

Our department addresses a wide spectrum of topics, from the minuteness of the microcosm to the full expanse of the macrocosm. Fields of research range from microscopic structure of matter in nuclear or molecular physics to the physics of black holes or the dynamics of galaxies. At the intermediate scales of the mesocosm condensed matter physics explores the fascinating world of crystalline structures and their technologically relevant phenomena. Biophysical research at Cologne addresses processes in biological systems, specifically in the context of evolution. The variety of topics represented at the department reflects in both, research and a rich spectrum of course offerings.
