Practical Training I & II
The practical trainings aim at the development of well-founded skills in scientific work:
- Linking theory, experiment and simulation
- Working with literature and data
- Productive teamwork in heterogeneous groups
- Scientific writing and presentation
The practical trainings consist of two lab courses and an advanced seminar. The choice of the seminar is independent from the choice of the lab courses.
Students have to give a talk in the seminar (not graded), hand in extensive paper-like lab reports for each conducted experiment (not graded) and pass two graded oral exams on the chosen lab courses.
Note that there are some important dates concerning the lab course registration.
Advanced Seminar
In the advanced seminar, participants explore a scientific topic, which they present to their fellow students in the form of a talk. They also attend the presentations given by other participants and provide constructive feedback. Seminars are usually taught 2 hours per week and give 3 credit points (CP).
There are multiple offers for the advanced seminar every semester including offers from Bonn.
Further seminars can be chosen in the Elective Area or - if they fit the chosen field - to replace a specialized course in the Primary Are of Specialization.
Lab Courses
Students have to choose 2 out of 6 different lab courses. The lab courses are usually done in groups of 2-3 students, lab reports often can be handed-in as a team. Please find information on the registration process for the individual lab courses below.

Registration deadlines for the upcoming winter term
- Lab courses Atomic and Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nuclear Physics, Particle Physics: registration via Database, deadline October 15th.

Mandatory briefings (WS 2026/27)
- For the lab courses in Molecular Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, and Nuclear Physics a combined online organisational meeting and security briefing will take place on Monday, October 19th at 14.45 that is mandatory for all students of these courses. The meeting will take place via Zoom.
- The lab course in Biological Physics will have its organisational meeting and a specific security briefing on Thursday October 19th, at 11:00 in room 0.46 of CoMB (Zülpicher Str. 47A).
- The mandatory introduction meeting for Computational Physics will take place on October 12th, 16:00 in SR ETP 0.03 (new theory building). Only students who take part in this meeting are eligible for the registration via ILIAS until October 13th, 18:00 see website.
The respective dates for the upcoming summer term 2027 will be announced here in February 2027.
